The Designer’s Eye: How I Inspect Tile Progress on Site

Today was a hands-on day at work, and I wanted to share a glimpse of my daily routine as an interior designer. This morning, I headed to one of our project sites for a tile installation inspection. While every site visit brings its unique challenges, it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of my job – seeing our designs slowly transform into reality.
Tile Installation Progress The focus today was on ensuring that the tile installation was proceeding smoothly. Tiles might seem like a small detail in the grand scheme of a project, but they’re one of those elements that can make or break the overall design. For this particular project, we’ve selected large-format porcelain tiles in a neutral tone to create a sleek and modern aesthetic.
When I arrived on site, the team was midway through installing the tiles in the living and dining areas. Here are some of the key things I checked during the inspection:
Alignment and Spacing: Proper alignment and consistent grout lines are critical. Misaligned tiles can disrupt the flow of the space and look unprofessional. I used a spirit level to ensure everything was even.
Cut and Edge Finishes: For areas near walls or corners, precise cutting is essential. Clean, straight edges ensure that the final look is polished.
Adhesion: I checked that the tiles were securely adhered to the substrate. Loose tiles can cause problems later, so it’s better to catch issues now.
Grouting Gaps: The spacing between tiles was another area of focus. Proper gaps ensure a clean finish and prevent future cracking or unevenness.
Problem-Solving on Site No site visit is complete without some troubleshooting! Today, we discovered that a small batch of tiles had a slight color variation compared to the others. This can happen due to differences in production lots, so it’s always a good idea to order a little extra for backup. We decided to use these tiles in less prominent areas, like under cabinetry, where the color variance won’t be noticeable.
Why These Inspections Matter As much as interior design is about creativity, it’s equally about execution. A beautiful design on paper means nothing if it’s not executed well. That’s why regular site inspections are a key part of my work. They ensure that the final result aligns with the original vision and meets the highest standards of quality.
Casual Reflection On days like this, I’m reminded of how much collaboration goes into every project. The tiling team’s expertise, the suppliers’ reliability, and our design vision all come together to create a cohesive result. While site inspections can be detailed and sometimes time-consuming, there’s a certain satisfaction in knowing that you’re catching and solving issues before they become bigger problems.
I hope this gives you a little insight into what goes on behind the scenes of an interior design project! If you’re planning a renovation or are curious about the process, feel free to reach out . I’d love to hear from you!
